TENS: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and PMS: Powered Muscle Stimulation is a noninvasive, drug free method of controlling pain TENS and PMS uses tiny electrical impulses sent through the skin to nerves to modify your pain perception. TENS and PMS does not work for everyone, however, in most patients it is effective in reducing or eliminating the pain, allowing for a return to normal activity.
TENS and PMS is intend to be used to relieve pain. The unit sends comfortable impulses through the skin that stimulate the nerve (or nerves) in the treatment area. In many cases, this stimulation will greatly reduce or eliminate the pain sensation the patient feels. Pain relief varies by individual patients, mode selected for therapy, and the type of pain. In many patients, the reduction o elimination of pain lasts longer than the actual period of stimulation (sometimes as much as three to four times longer) In others; pain is only modified while stimulation actually occurs.
If used as directed, TENS and PMS are safe, reliable and, in fact, have been used by the medical community for many decades. The technology continues to be used extensively in hospital settings, physiotherapy clinics, and is used by chiropractors, spas and health clubs.
Since your muscles are contracting and relaxing in a similar fashion to regular exercise, the sensation feels very similar to a good workout. Some have described it as a mild tingling sensation. Remember that since you control the strength of the impulses, you also control the amount of stimulation and can adjust for your own comfort level.
Many people experience immediate relief from muscle pain, while others require several days of regular use to feel the benefits. The results vary and will depend upon your underlying conditions and how often you use the device. If your pain does not improve, you can try to increase the intensity and time or change the mode.
